The number of families depend on food stamps has been on the rise all over the State for four years, a phenomenon that officials attribute the national recession took hold in 2007.
Nearly one in five residents of Louisiana, or 380,835 people, depending on additional nutrition assistance Program, or SNAP, to supplement their monthly food budget.
In terms of growth, the second highest is on the Houma-Thibodaux. Food stamp recipients increased by 39 per cent of the 2006-07, according to the State number.
While there has long been a stereotypical ideas that use food stamps, State officials say the poor economy has been working to change that.
